The Great Temple is one of the largest buildings in the centre of Petra, built by the Nabataeans in the 1st century BC on terraces south of the Colonnaded Street. Excavations by Brown University from the 1990s uncovered its courtyards, colonnades and a small theatre-like hall inside the temple itself. Visitors climb a broad stairway from the street to the lower courtyard, where the hexagonal paving and column drums lie restored or in place. Qasr al-Bint and the Temenos Gate are a short walk west.
