Petra's theatre was carved out of the mountainside in the 1st century AD, in the reign of the Nabataean king Aretas IV. Its builders cut through older tombs to make room, and the openings of some can still be seen in the rock above the top rows. It was enlarged after the Romans took over the kingdom in 106 AD and could then seat several thousand people. The theatre stands beside the main path through Petra, just past the Street of Facades and below the Royal Tombs.
