Husein-kapetan Gradaščević (1802-1834) was the captain of Gradačac who in 1831 led the Bosnian nobles in their movement for autonomy within the Ottoman state. He defeated the Grand Vizier's army that summer and was proclaimed vizier of Bosnia, but was defeated in 1832 and spent his last years in exile in Istanbul. This house in Gradačac is associated with his family and memory. He is honoured in Bosnia as a national hero, and a visit here pairs naturally with his fortress tower, the Husejnija Masjid and the clock tower he built.
