About Gradačac Fortress

The old town of Gradačac grew around a hilltop fortress that was greatly extended in the eighteenth century, from 1756 onwards. At its top stands the tower of Husein-kapetan Gradaščević, a fortified residence rising to about eighteen metres, from which he governed as captain of Gradačac. Husein-kapetan, born here in 1802 and remembered as the Dragon of Bosnia, led the Bosnian movement for autonomy in 1831-32 before being defeated and sent into exile. The walls, tower and lower town are a national monument and are being restored, and the ramparts offer the best view over Gradačac.
