On the evening of 25 May 1995, a single shell fired from Serb positions struck the Kapija square in the centre of Tuzla, where crowds of young people had gathered. Seventy-one people were killed, most of them under 25, and more than a hundred were wounded. A memorial stands at the spot by the gate of the Behram Bey Madrasa, and the victims were buried together in a memorial graveyard in Slana Banja park. Each year on 25 May the city gathers here to remember them.
