Tuzla has been known for salt since ancient times, and its Ottoman name comes from the Turkish word for salt. The Pannonian Lakes were created from 2003 onwards on the site of old salt workings, filled with salt water drawn from beneath the city. There are three lakes with sandy beaches, cascades and terraces, and the warm, salty water is said to be good for health. They are a popular family destination in summer, with cafés and play areas, and the old town and the Turali Bey Masjid are a short walk away.
