About Grave of Nabi Shu'ayb

The grave of Nabi Shu'ayb (AS) stands at Maqam al-Nabi Shu'ayb (مقام النبي شعيب), near the historic Palestinian village of Hittin west of Tiberias. The site is the foremost sacred place of the Druze community and preserves one of Palestine’s oldest traditions concerning Nabi Shu'ayb (AS). Nabi Shu'ayb and the people of Madyan Allah sent Nabi Shu'ayb (AS) to Madyan. He called his people to worship Allah alone, to give honest measure and weight, and to end the commercial injustice and corruption practised among them. The Qur'an relates that the leaders of Madyan rejected Nabi Shu'ayb (AS), threatened to expel him and those who believed with him, and demanded the punishment of which he warned them. Allah saved Nabi Shu'ayb (AS) and the believers, while the wrongdoers were overtaken by the earthquake. The maqam beside Hittin Medieval Muslim geography records the grave of Nabi Shu'ayb (AS) near Hittin and Tiberias. The maqam stands on the southwestern side of Hittin, close to the ground where Salahuddin al-Ayubi defeated the Crusader army at the Battle of Hittin in 583 AH/1187, opening the way for the recovery of al-Quds later that year. The complex developed through successive periods. Its older present-day section was reconstructed in the 1880s under Shaykh Muhanna Tarif of Julis, who brought together Druze religious leaders to support the work. The grave of Nabi Shu'ayb (AS) remains under Druze custodianship, and the annual Ziyarat al-Nabi Shu'ayb is held here in April.
