Nazareth Village recreates the agricultural and domestic world of first-century Galilee, the period associated with Nabi Isa ibn Maryam (AS). Known in Arabic as قرية الناصرة, the open-air museum occupies ancient farmland near the historic centre of Nazareth in Palestine. The project opened in 2000 after archaeological research on the land. It combines surviving agricultural features with reconstructed houses, workshops and communal spaces based on evidence from Nazareth and other excavated settlements across Galilee. An ancient farm beneath the reconstructed village Surveys and excavations carried out between 1997 and 2002 documented a rock-cut wine press, agricultural terraces, quarries, watchtowers and a spring-fed irrigation system. Pottery recovered from the site spans several periods, including material from long before the first century. The wine press belonged to the agricultural landscape outside ancient Nazareth and lay roughly 500 metres from the early settlement. The project restored parts of this farm and added reconstructions of first-century houses, an olive press, a watchtower, a ritual bath and a synagogue. The research team drew upon archaeology from Galilee and further afield where the Nazareth evidence did not preserve a complete building type. Costumed interpreters demonstrate farming, weaving, carpentry, food preparation and other forms of village work. These presentations explain how households depended upon terraced cultivation, seasonal harvests, stored water, shared courtyards and hand-operated tools. Nabi Isa and the world of Nazareth Christian tradition relates that Nazareth was the town in which Nabi Isa (AS), Jesus, grew up. The Qur’an does not name Nazareth, but it identifies Nabi Isa (AS) as al-Masih, the son of Sayyidah Maryam, born through Allah’s command without a father. Allah gave Nabi Isa (AS) the Injil, supported him with the Pure Spirit and sent him to Bani Isra’il, calling them to worship Allah. The reconstructed farm does not mark a particular Qur’anic event or a known residence of Nabi Isa (AS). Its value lies in the documented agricultural setting: presses cut into bedrock, cultivated terraces, irrigation works and quarries of the kind that formed the working landscape around first-century Nazareth. Together with the reconstructed buildings and crafts, these features place the life of Nabi Isa (AS) within the rural Palestinian society of his time.
