The Urn Tomb is the first and best known of the Royal Tombs, cut high in the cliff of Jabal al-Khubtha in the 1st century AD. It takes its name from the urn carved on top of its pediment. The facade stands on two storeys of arched vaults, with a courtyard in front once lined by columns on both sides, and inside is a single great hall. In the 5th century the hall was used as a church. A flight of steps climbs to the courtyard from the Colonnaded Street, and the terrace gives wide views over the centre of Petra.
