The Siq is the narrow gorge that leads into Petra, about 1.2 kilometres long, its walls rising to around 80 metres in places. It was the main entrance to the Nabataean city, and the Nabataeans cut water channels along both sides and laid clay pipes to bring spring water from Wadi Musa into the city. Along the way are carved niches, the remains of the old paved road and a worn relief of a camel caravan. A dam at the entrance turns floodwater away into a tunnel, and the walk ends at the first sight of the Treasury.
