Petra is the rock-cut city of the Nabataeans, carved into the red sandstone mountains of southern Jordan and inscribed by UNESCO. It was a great caravan city on the incense routes, and today it is Jordan's best-known site. The visit begins with the walk through the narrow gorge of the Siq to the Treasury, and continues past the royal tombs, the theatre and the colonnaded street to the Monastery high above the valley. Jabal Harun, with the grave of Nabi Harun, rises to the south-west.
