About Kuršumlija Masjid, Kladanj

The Kuršumlija Masjid of Kladanj was built in 1544-45 by Hajji Bali Bey, who left a large endowment for its upkeep. It is the only surviving mosque of its kind from the earliest Ottoman period in north-eastern Bosnia, and its name comes from kuršum, lead, the traditional covering of Ottoman domes. Inside, traces of the old painted decoration survive in the dome. The mosque has been restored several times, most recently after the war of the 1990s, and in 2005 it was declared a national monument together with the fountain of Hajji Đurđihanuma, its enclosure wall and its graveyard.
