Al-Madrasah al-Firdaws, the School of Paradise, was founded around 1235 by Dayfa Khatun, the widow of al-Zahir Ghazi, who later ruled Aleppo as regent for her grandson. It is one of the largest and most beautiful Ayyubid buildings in the city, combining a school, a mosque and a Sufi lodge around a courtyard with a central pool. Its prayer hall with three domes, its carved mihrab and the long inscription around its courtyard are masterpieces of Ayyubid architecture. The madrasa stands south of the old city outside Bab al-Maqam and is still used as a mosque.
