Khan al-Gumruk, the Customs Khan, is the largest caravanserai in old Aleppo, covering about 6,400 square metres in the heart of the souqs. It was built in 1574 by the Ottoman governor Ibrahim Pasha and became the base of the French, English and Dutch merchants and consuls who traded in the city. It has some fifty storerooms on the ground floor and more than seventy above, a small mosque in its courtyard and a richly decorated gateway, and it is still used by textile traders.
