Al-Madrasah al-Zahiriyyah stands outside Bab al-Maqam, south of the old city of Aleppo, not far from al-Firdaws madrasa. It is attributed to al-Malik al-Zahir Ghazi, the son of Salah al-Din, and dates from around 1217 to 1219, in the quarter where the Ayyubids founded several of their schools. It is admired for the simple elegance of its stonework. The madrasa is still a place of learning and is used today for teaching the Qur'an.
