Al-Madrasah al-Sultaniyyah stands opposite the entrance to the Citadel of Aleppo. It was begun by al-Malik al-Zahir Ghazi, the son of Salah al-Din and ruler of Aleppo, and completed in the 1220s after his passing in 1216. He was buried in its domed tomb chamber with members of his family. The madrasa was known for its finely carved mihrab and was an important centre of learning for centuries.
