Masjid Sayyid al-Shuhada stands beside the graveyard of the martyrs of Uhud and takes its name from Sayyiduna Hamzah ibn Abd al-Muttalib, the uncle of Nabi Muhammad ﷺ, who was given the title Master of the Martyrs. Seventy Companions fell at Uhud in 3 AH and are buried at the foot of the small hill of al-Rumat. The present mosque was completed in 2017. It covers about 54,000 square metres and holds up to 15,000 worshippers, and most visitors to Uhud pray here before visiting the graves and the hill of the archers. It lies about 3 km north of Masjid al-Nabawi.
