Hamzah ibn Abd al-Muttalib, the uncle and foster-brother of Nabi Muhammad ﷺ, lies at the foot of Mount Uhud, where he was martyred during the Battle of Uhud in 3 AH. He had embraced Islam in Makkah in its early years, and his acceptance gave strength to the small community of believers. He became known as Asad Allah, the Lion of Allah. He was struck down at Uhud by Wahshi ibn Harb, and his loss grieved the Prophet ﷺ deeply. He is honoured as Sayyid al-Shuhada, the Master of the Martyrs. Abdullah ibn Jahsh, the Prophet's ﷺ cousin, was buried in the same grave. The grave lies within the walled graveyard of the Uhud martyrs, beside Masjid Sayyid al-Shuhada.
