On the eve of the Battle of Uhud in Shawwal 3 AH, Nabi Muhammad ﷺ led about a thousand Companions out of Madinah and camped for the night at a place called al-Shaykhan, named after two old forts that stood there. Here he reviewed the army and sent back several boys who were too young to fight. According to tradition he also put on his armour here, which is why the mosque is also called Masjid al-Dir', the Mosque of the Armour. The small restored mosque stands on Sayyid al-Shuhada Road between the city and Mount Uhud, and it is often visited on the way to the Uhud battlefield and the martyrs' graveyard.
