Before the Battle of Uhud in 3 AH, Nabi Muhammad ﷺ placed fifty archers under Abdullah ibn Jubayr on this small hill, known as Jabal al-Rumah or Jabal Aynayn, with firm orders not to leave it whatever happened. In the first part of the battle the Muslims drove the Quraysh back, but when most of the archers saw the enemy retreating they came down to collect the spoils. Khalid ibn al-Walid, then still fighting for the Quraysh, saw the gap and led the cavalry around behind the Muslims. The tide turned, around seventy Muslims were martyred and the Prophet ﷺ himself was wounded. The hill stands beside the martyrs' graveyard at the foot of Mount Uhud, and many visitors climb it to look over the battlefield and reflect on the lessons of that day.
