The martyrs of the Battle of Uhud were buried where they fell, at the foot of Mount Uhud. Around seventy Companions lie here, among them Sayyiduna Hamzah ibn Abd al-Muttalib, the uncle of Nabi Muhammad ﷺ, honoured as Sayyid al-Shuhada, the Master of the Martyrs. With them lie Mus'ab ibn Umayr, the first teacher sent to Madinah, and Abdullah ibn Jahsh, the Prophet's ﷺ cousin, who was buried in the same grave as Hamzah, along with many of the Ansar. The Prophet ﷺ came back to visit these graves in the years that followed. Today the graveyard is enclosed by a wall with viewing railings, beside the large Masjid Sayyid al-Shuhada, and it is one of the most visited places in Madinah after Masjid al-Nabawi and Masjid Quba.
