Mount Uhud is the great reddish granite range that rises about five kilometres north of Masjid al-Nabawi. The mountain was dear to Nabi Muhammad ﷺ, and it is bound up with the story of Madinah because the Battle of Uhud was fought at its foot in Shawwal 3 AH, when the Quraysh came to avenge their defeat at Badr. The mountain stretches for about seven kilometres from east to west. At its southern foot lie the graveyard of the martyrs, including Sayyiduna Hamzah, and the Hill of the Archers, while a cave on its slopes is linked with the Prophet's ﷺ shelter after the battle. Visitors usually come in the morning and combine the visit with the martyrs' graveyard and Masjid Sayyid al-Shuhada.
