The Seven Mosques stand at the western foot of Mount Sal', where the Muslims camped during the Battle of the Trench (al-Ahzab) in 5 AH. The largest, Masjid al-Fath, marks the place where Nabi Muhammad ﷺ made du'a for victory during the siege, and the others carry the names of those stationed nearby: Salman al-Farsi, who proposed digging the trench, Abu Bakr, Umar, Sayyiduna Ali and Sayyidah Fatimah. Masjid al-Fath was first built in the time of Umar ibn Abd al-Aziz and renovated in the twelfth century, and a small mosque was added in the Ottoman period. Some of the old mosques were later combined, and the large Masjid al-Khandaq now stands beside them. A short climb leads up to Masjid al-Fath, and Mount Sal' and Masjid al-Rayah are close by.
