Sumayyah bint Khayyat was among the earliest Muslims of Makkah and is honoured as the first martyr of Islam. She belonged to the household of Abu Hudhayfa ibn al-Mughira of the Makhzum clan, who gave her in marriage to Yasir ibn Amir, and she was the mother of the Companion Ammar ibn Yasir. When the family's acceptance of Islam became known, the leaders of Makhzum punished them in the heat of Makkah, and Sumayyah, refusing to give up her faith, was killed by Abu Jahl around 615, several years before the Hijra. Her husband Yasir also lost his life under the same treatment soon afterwards. Pilgrims honour Al-Shubaykah Cemetery, about 700 metres west of the Ka'bah in the district of the same name, as her resting place. The graves inside the walled cemetery are plain and unmarked, so this listing is placed at the cemetery's entrance; the exact location of her grave will be confirmed soon. The gate is usually closed, and visitors greet those buried here from outside.
