About Home of Amr ibn al-As

Amr ibn al-As of the clan of Sahm was one of the leading men of Quraysh. He accepted Islam in Safar 8 AH, before the conquest of Makkah, and the Prophet ﷺ placed him in command of the expedition of Dhat al-Salasil and later sent him to Oman. He went on to lead the Muslim armies in Palestine and Egypt, where he founded the city of Fustat and its mosque, and he passed away in 43 AH. His house in Makkah stood on the western side of Masjid al-Haram, and the gate of the mosque on that side, later called Bab al-Atiq, was known by his name. Nothing of the house survives, and its site lies about 160 metres west of the Ka'bah.
