Khaybar was a fertile oasis about 150 kilometres north of Madinah, with palm groves, springs and a chain of strong forts held by Jewish tribes, some of whose leaders had helped organise the alliance against Madinah at the Battle of the Trench. In Muharram 7 AH, Nabi Muhammad ﷺ led around 1,400 Companions to Khaybar and besieged the forts one after another. The decisive moment came when the Prophet ﷺ gave the banner to Sayyiduna Ali, who led the assault that took the great fort of al-Qamus. After the victory the people of Khaybar were allowed to keep working their land in return for half of the harvest. The old town of Khaybar, with its abandoned basalt houses beneath the fort on the hill, can still be visited.
