Fadak was a rich oasis of palms and springs north-east of Khaybar. After the fall of Khaybar in 7 AH its people made peace with Nabi Muhammad ﷺ without fighting, handing over half of their land, and because it was gained without battle it was set aside for the Prophet ﷺ, who used its income for his family and for the poor and travellers. After the Prophet's ﷺ passing, Sayyidah Fatimah asked for Fadak, and the question of who should hold it became a well-known matter between her and Abu Bakr, which Muslims of different traditions have understood in different ways. Its status changed several times under later caliphs. The oasis lies near the town of al-Ha'it in the Ha'il region.
