The White Masjid, al-Masjid al-Abyad, is the oldest mosque in Nazareth. It was founded in 1785 and completed in the early nineteenth century, and its name is said to stand for peace and harmony among the people of the town. It stands in the heart of the old market, in the area known as the Mosque Quarter, with a slender pencil-shaped minaret, cream walls and a green dome and trim in the Ottoman style. The mosque runs cultural and educational programmes, and the Basilica of the Annunciation and the Grave of Shihab al-Din are a few minutes' walk away.
