The Zaydani Masjid, also known as the Great Mosque of Tiberias, was built in 1743 by Zahir al-Umar al-Zaydani, the Arab ruler of Galilee who made Tiberias one of his first strongholds. It was the main Friday mosque of the town in the Ottoman period. The mosque is built of the local black basalt, with a row of domes over open arcades and a tall minaret. It is no longer used for prayer and stands in the old centre of Tiberias, a short walk from the Sea Masjid on the lakeshore.
