About Turbat al-Sa‘adiyya

Turbat al-Sa‘adiyya (التربة السعدية) contains the grave of Amir Sa‘d al-Din Mas‘ud, a Mamluk official whose endowment for the site was recorded in 711 AH / 1311 CE. The turba stands on the north side of Tariq Bab al-Silsila, where the street enters the square before Bab al-Silsila of Masjid al-Aqsa. It faces the Tankiziyya Madrasa and adjoins the Turba of Turkan Khatun, placing it among the Mamluk institutions built along one of the principal approaches to Al-Aqsa. The endowment of Sa‘d al-Din Mas‘ud The Jerusalem chronicler Mujir al-Din al-Ulaymi identifies the founder as Sa‘d al-Din Mas‘ud, son of Amir Badr al-Din Sunqur ibn Abdullah al-Jashankir al-Rumi. Sa‘d al-Din Mas‘ud served as chamberlain in Damascus during the reign of the Mamluk sultan al-Nasir Muhammad ibn Qalawun. His endowment deed was dated 27 Rabi al-Thani 711 AH / 12 September 1311 CE. The complex comprises an eastern grave chamber and a vaulted hall to the west, connected by a corridor entered from Tariq Bab al-Silsila. The maqam of Sa‘d al-Din Mas‘ud occupies the grave chamber. The Mamluk entrance on Tariq Bab al-Silsila The street frontage preserves a recessed Mamluk portal framed by alternating dark and light masonry. Stone benches flank the entrance, while geometric carving and tiers of muqarnas—projecting niches arranged into a vaulted composition—rise above the lintel. A paired window opens from the grave chamber toward the street. The building is now known as Dar al-Khalidi. Its earlier name preserves the memory of Sa‘d al-Din Mas‘ud and the network of graves, madrasas, ribats and endowed buildings that formed around Bab al-Silsila during Mamluk rule.
