Maglaj is first recorded in 1408, and its fortress stands on a crag above the river Bosna. The Ottomans took the town in the later fifteenth century and developed the fortress, which was damaged during Prince Eugene of Savoy's raid of 1697. Parts of the walls and towers survive, together with a clock tower that still works. The climb from the old town is short, and the view over Maglaj, the Kuršumlija Masjid and the river valley is the main reward.
