The Sultan Ahmed Masjid, also called the Čaršija Masjid, stands in the centre of Zenica and is one of the town's oldest mosques. It bears the name of Sultan Ahmed, and the earliest records show that a mosque stood here from the early Ottoman period. The mosque was destroyed and rebuilt several times, notably after Prince Eugene of Savoy's raid of 1697 and the great flood of 1869. Together with its madrasa it forms a protected national monument, and today it is the heart of an active Islamic centre in the town.
