The mosque of Ćejvan Kethuda was built in 1552 and is the oldest mosque in Mostar, older than the Old Bridge itself. It stands a few steps from the bridge on the eastern bank of the Neretva, in the heart of the old bazaar. It is a compact stone mosque with a slender minaret, and a madrasa was later built on the same compound, so the site became a small centre of learning as well as prayer. It is still in use, and its quiet courtyard is a welcome contrast to the crowds of the bazaar outside.
