About Red Masjid, Safed

The Red Masjid, al-Jami' al-Ahmar, was built by the Mamluk sultan Baybars in 1275, after he took Safed from the Templars in 1266. It was one of the main works of the Mamluk rebuilding of the town, which Baybars made the capital of a province. Its portal has a carved muqarnas hood over a wooden door, and a courtyard opens behind it. The building is no longer used for prayer, and it stands in the old town of Safed below the citadel hill.
