The Sheesh Mahal, the Palace of Mirrors, was built for Shah Jahan in 1631–32 in the Shah Burj, the north-western block of private apartments of the Lahore Fort. Its walls and vaulted ceilings are covered in ayina kari, a mosaic of small convex mirrors set into stucco, together with marble panels inlaid with semi-precious stones. The palace opens onto a marble courtyard with a central pool, with the Naulakha Pavilion on its western side. It is part of the Lahore Fort, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site with the Shalimar Gardens, and the mirror work catches the light best in the late afternoon.
