The Lahore Fort, the Shahi Qila, is the citadel of the city. A fort has stood here for about a thousand years, and the present one was largely rebuilt by Akbar from 1566 and extended by Jahangir, Shah Jahan and Aurangzeb, whose Alamgiri Gate faces the Badshahi Mosque. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site together with the Shalimar Gardens. Inside are the Diwan-i Aam and Diwan-i Khas, the Sheesh Mahal with its mirror-work ceilings, the Naulakha pavilion and the Moti Masjid. The long Picture Wall on the outside is covered in tile mosaic of hunting scenes, animals and court life. Allow at least half a day to see the fort properly.
