The Elephant Steps, known locally as Hathi Paer, are a wide royal stairway in the north-western part of the Lahore Fort. The low, deep steps were built so that elephants carrying the emperor and the royal women could climb from the Shah Burj gate up to the private quarters. The stairway climbs inside the fort wall towards the Sheesh Mahal, just behind the stretch of wall covered by the Picture Wall, and it is one of the most unusual features of the fort.
