About Badshahi Mosque

The Badshahi Mosque was built by the emperor Aurangzeb in 1671 to 1673 under the supervision of his foster brother Fidai Khan Koka, and for a long time it was one of the largest mosques in the world. Its courtyard holds tens of thousands of worshippers, and it remains Lahore's principal congregational mosque. The mosque is built of red sandstone with three white marble domes and a tall minaret at each corner, and it faces the Alamgiri Gate of the Lahore Fort across Hazuri Bagh. A small gallery above the main gateway displays relics. The tomb of Muhammad Iqbal stands at the foot of its steps, and the restaurants of Fort Road look out over it.
