About Grave of Muhammad Iqbal

Muhammad Iqbal (1877 to 1938) was a poet and philosopher writing in Urdu and Persian, born in Sialkot and settled in Lahore for most of his life. Works such as Asrar-i Khudi and Bang-i Dara made him the most influential Muslim poet of the twentieth century in South Asia, and he is honoured in Pakistan as its national poet. His tomb stands in Hazuri Bagh, at the foot of the steps of the Badshahi Mosque, with the Lahore Fort opposite. It is a small square building of red sandstone completed in the early 1950s, and the marble grave inside is surrounded by panels carved with his Persian verse. A guard of honour is kept at the tomb, and it is usually open during the day.
