The Shadhbakhtiyya Madrasa was founded in 589 AH (1193) by the emir Shadhbakht, a freedman of Nur al-Din Zangi and governor of the Aleppo citadel. It is one of the finest Ayyubid buildings of the city, with a carved stone portal and a mihrab of fine workmanship. The madrasa stands in Souq al-Zarb, one of the covered souqs below the citadel, and is now used as a mosque.
