The Saffahiyya Mosque was founded in 828 AH (1425) by the qadi Ahmad ibn Salih ibn al-Saffah as a mosque and madrasa for the Shafi'i school, as the inscription over its door records. It was restored in 1343 AH (1925) and is best known for its octagonal minaret, one of the most elegant in Aleppo. The mosque stands in the al-Saffahiyya quarter south-west of the citadel, a quarter of fountains and old schools. Its facade is decorated with carved geometric stonework of the Mamluk period.
