Lake Qattinah, also called the Lake of Homs, lies on the Orontes south-west of the city. It was formed by an ancient dam across the river and enlarged by a higher dam in the twentieth century, and its waters have long irrigated the fields around Homs. The lake shore is a local spot for outings and picnics, a short drive from Homs near the town of Qattinah.
