The Great al-Nuri Mosque is the main historic mosque of Homs, standing on the site of an ancient temple that later became a church. It takes its name from Nur al-Din Zangi, who rebuilt and enlarged it in the twelfth century. The mosque stands on al-Nuri street in the old centre of Homs, near the old souqs, and remains the city's principal congregational mosque. The Khalid ibn al-Walid Mosque and the Homs Citadel are a short drive away.
