The small al-Sarw Mosque, the Mosque of the Cypress, in the Bab al-Dreib quarter of Homs is known locally as the Mosque of Wahshi and Thawban. Thawban was a freed servant of Nabi Muhammad ﷺ who stayed close to him until his passing and then settled in Hims. Wahshi ibn Harb was the Abyssinian who killed Sayyiduna Hamza at Uhud before he became Muslim; after accepting Islam he fought at Yamamah, where he is said to have killed the false prophet Musaylimah, and he later lived in Hims. Their graves lie to the right of the entrance, and tradition adds that Safinah, another freed servant of the Prophet ﷺ, is buried here as well. The mosque takes its name from the cypress trees in its outer courtyard.
