Usfan, on the old road between Makkah and Madinah, was a watering place known since the time of Nabi Muhammad ﷺ, who passed it on his journeys and campaigns. In the eighteenth century the Ottomans built this fort on a hill above the town to guard the road and its wells. The stone walls and towers of the fort still crown the hill, with wide views over Usfan, about 80 km north of Makkah.
