Bab Makkah was the eastern gate of old Jeddah, facing the road to Makkah, through which pilgrims and caravans set out for the Haram. The city wall was built in 1509 under the Mamluk sultan Qansuh al-Ghuri and had several gates, and the wall was taken down in 1947. The gate stands at the edge of the UNESCO-listed historic district, surrounded by a busy market selling dates, spices, perfume and street food. It is a good starting point for a walk into al-Balad, especially in the evening.
