In Ramadan 8 AH, as Nabi Muhammad ﷺ marched on Makkah with ten thousand Companions, the army camped at Marr al-Zahran, in what is now Wadi Fatimah. The Prophet ﷺ had each man light a fire, and the Quraysh were stunned by the size of the camp. That night Abu Sufyan came out to the camp with Sayyiduna al-Abbas and accepted Islam, and the conquest that followed took place with almost no fighting. Masjid al-Fath stands at the place of the camp in the town of al-Jumum, about twenty-five kilometres north of Makkah on the road to Madinah. It was restored and reopened in recent years and is an easy stop for those travelling between the two Holy Cities.
