On the march to Tabuk in 9 AH, the Muslim army passed through Wadi al-Qura, the valley where al-Ula now stands. Tradition holds that Nabi Muhammad ﷺ prayed at this spot and marked out the direction of the qibla with bones, which gave the mosque its name, al-Izam, meaning the bones. The mosque stands in the old town of al-Ula, among the mud-brick houses of the historic quarter, and has been restored in recent years. It is one of the few places in the al-Ula area linked directly with the life of the Prophet ﷺ.
