Shaumari, set up in 1975, was Jordan's first nature reserve. It was created to bring back animals that had vanished from the desert, and the Arabian oryx was returned here from 1978, along with gazelles, onagers and ostriches. Visitors can take a safari drive through the enclosures and see the animals at close range. The reserve lies just south of Azraq, near the Azraq Wetland Reserve.
