Jawa is a walled town built in the basalt desert of north-eastern Jordan before 3000 BC, in the early Bronze Age, among the oldest known in the country. Its people built a system of dams, channels and pools to gather the winter rains, one of the earliest of its kind. The site lies deep in the desert east of Mafraq and is hard to reach without a local guide and a four-wheel-drive vehicle.
